As the old maxim goes, behind every great man, there’s a woman. In the case of the just-announced “Justice League” movie, however, it would seem that a movie about the group’s woman is far, far behind the men.
According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, Warner Bros. is actively developing movies based on the comics “Shazam,” “Metal Men,” “Fables” and “100 Bullets,” but worldwide marketing president Sue Kroll wouldn’t venture a comment on the possibility of a Wonder Woman movie stronger than that it “could be viable.”
So, loyal audiences, get ready to see that long-awaited “Fables” movie before we see the Amazonian princess and her invisible jet take center stage. Er, screen.
Wonder Woman will appear in the upcoming untitled “Batman Vs. Superman” movie, as portrayed by Gal Gadot, best known for her role in “Fast & Furious 6″ and “Fast Five.” Gadot could make her big break in the May 2016 release, but the fact that mega-famous Ben Affleck was cast as franchise centerpiece Batman, while we were left asking “Who?” and “Is Gal really a name?” after Gadot’s casting was announced, is not the greatest of omens for a solo flick.
After several failed attempts (we’re still fond of Adrianne Palicki swinging the lasso, R.I.P. that NBC pilot), there are still hankerings for a Wonder Woman solo outing. Even one of the Avengers has publicly called for action.
Anthony Mackie, who plays The Falcon in Marvel’s “Avengers” franchise, recently remarked that the world of superhero movies needed a little more XX, specifically of the Amazonian variety.
“Scarlett [Johansson] does great representation for all the other girls, but there should be a Wonder Woman movie,” he said. “I don’t care if they make 20 bucks, if there’s a movie you’re gonna lose money on, make it Wonder Woman. You know what I mean, ’cause little girls deserve that.”
Amen. But first, we apparently have to resign ourselves to figuring out whatever the heck the “Shazam” comics are about.
