With over 40 films under her belt, Priyanka Chopra is known the world over as one of Bollywood’s highest paid actresses. But America is just now getting acquainted with the former Miss World as she embarks on her new career of pop star.
The Interscope signee has been taken under the wing of the legendary Jimmy Iovine, Lady Gaga‘s manager Troy Carter and her producer RedOne. She made a splash in the music industry last summer with her debut single “In My City” featuring will.i.am, which was selected as the theme song for Thursday Night Football. Her new track “Exotic” with Pitbull is making even more noise, garnering more than 10 million hits on YouTube in less than a month and landing in the Billboard Dance charts.
She’s a humanitarian, a green activist and there’s still more to know about Priyanka Chopra. She paid her first visit to MTV News, and we learned a few fun facts about the Indian beauty.
Looking Good Isn’t Always Easy
You might think being the “Indian Angelina Jolie” is a piece of cake but even Chopra has a tough time looking good all the time. Despite showing off her svelte bod in “Exotic,” Chopra reveals the hardest part of shooting the video was “to be in the water for six hours and not look like a prune.” The comforting discovery proves she, too, is human.
Transitions Can Be Challenging
At her most vulnerable, Chopra calls her transition into the music industry “hard.” “I guess I didn’t realize how different both the professions were,” she candidly reveals. “As an actor, I guess it’s what I know, it’s what I breathe, it’s what I do and being a musician, I’ve always been very close to music, music has been a part of me but the creating of it was something I was never so intimate with and that for me is magic.”
Big Dreams
She’s already recorded with some major players including Timbaland and Zedd for her new album, but her dream collabo might not be one you expect. “To do anything with someone like Bono or someone would be like, you know, a milestone I think as a musician,” she gushes. The multi-talented performer also has dream co-stars, citing Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio as leading men she would love to work with.
She Likes Her ‘Suit & Tie’
While Britney Spears, Beyonc— and Jay-Z round out some of Chopra’s favorite artists, there’s something else the Bollywood beauty would rather do with Justin Timberlake besides partake in a jam session, “Well, Justin Timberlake, I’d like to learn a little more about his suit and tie,” she tells MTV News coyly. As for her iPod, the singer is “obsessed with Daft Punk’s new album right now,” especially when on the road.
The World Awaits
Although Chopra is currently focusing her energy on promoting “Exotic,” she promises a world tour is imminent and could take place as early as next year. But having to represent your culture on a global platform can be a daunting task for anyone, and she’s taking it in “baby steps.”
Being “Exotic” has its advantages, though, as noted by “American Idol’s” Randy Jackson, with whom Chopra was seen on Instagram posing alongside Paula Abdul. “He said it’s great that I’ve kept my individuality and my culture and where I come from and he said, you know, I should stick to that and be unique and I think that’s great advice,” Chopra says of her conversation with the top dawg.
