Despite the threat of a possible fly-over by the remnants of Hurricane Andrea on Saturday, organizers of the Governors Ball Music Festivals on New York’s Randall’s Island say all systems are go for the event. The three-day festival featuring headlining sets from Kanye West, Kings of Leon and Guns N’ Roses, kicked off on Friday (June 7) and runs through Sunday night.
A message on the event’s website on Friday read, “The event is 100% happening rain or shine. Come prepared! You are free to bring umbrellas, rain gear, extra socks, rain boots and a great attitude.” A spokesperson for the event confirmed to MTV News that as of press time the show would go on, rain or shine, but said a staffer was not available to speak about the weather action plan. Spokespeople for the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation and the Randall’s Island Park Alliance did not return calls for comment at press time.
Current forecasts call for heavy rainfall, possible tornadoes and flooding in the New York area, according to weather.com, with tropical storm force winds expanding more than 200 miles from the center of the storm, which is expected to weaken as it moves up the East Coast through Saturday morning. By the time it hits the New York area, Andrea’s winds are predicted to drop below 50 m.p.h., but the threat of coastal flooding remains due to an expected 3-4 inches of precipitation.
Among the headlining acts whose sets could be impacted on Saturday are Guns N’ Roses (who played a warm-up show in Brooklyn on Thursday night), Nas, Kendrick Lamar and Animal Collective. Other bands slated to take the stage on Saturday include Icona Pop, Alt-J, Azealia Banks and Cut Copy.
Organizers are encouraging attendees to follow the festival on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram over the course of the weekend to get updates and announcements.
