Over the course of nine seasons, “How I Met Your Mother” has promised the meeting of two characters, one of whom we didn’t meet until last year’s final episode, and in tonight’s finale, fans of the sitcom will see the moment Ted meets his kids’ mom, played by “Wolf of Wall Street” actress Cristin Milioti.
When I spoke with Milioti, she explained that she had no idea what she was getting into with “How I Met Your Mother,” but that she’s glad she didn’t.
Check out the rest of our conversation about the show below, and find out what it’s been like for Milioti to be at the center of all of the questions and playing a character that doesn’t have a name… yet.
What was it like not only jumping into a show for its last season, but immediately becoming the center of all story questions?
I was blissfully ignorant going into this. I had never seen the show. I’m so glad I had never seen the show because I would not have known what I was getting into. I don’t think I would have made it through the first couple of episodes. I had no idea what it was.
I knew of the show, but I didn’t know the gravity of what this role was. Then I figured it out, as I watched all of the episodes. It was like throwing myself head-first into it. I probably wouldn’t have been able to have done that without “Wolf of Wall Street.” And I wouldn’t have been able to do that if I hadn’t done “Once.” There were all of these instances of just having to throw myself into something, which is the most exciting thing in the world. That’s why our jobs are the coolest. I don’t understand when people complain. Not that people complain, but acting is the most incredible thing in the world. You get to burst into these different worlds over and over and over.
And then you had the benefit of an entire episode to yourself.
That episode they gave me that was all about her backstory. That was incredible of them. It was unreal to be given that opportunity, but it was also so key. It made her real in a way, because you had to understand that she had a Robin. She had someone who she loved for years and was unable to let go of. You find out that they’re both in that inn having just finally let go, and neither one wants to meet anyone. They let go of this person. He expects to go to Chicago. She expects to play this wedding and go back to New York. I love that.
And yet she still doesn’t have a name.
Yeah, well, you know. It doesn’t matter. You don’t need a name.
So you’re happy with “The Mother”? I think that’s what it says on IMDb.
Is that what it says?
Yeah. Capital “T” and capital “M.” The Mother.
The Mother. Nice.
The “How I Met Your Mother” finale airs tonight at 8 p.m. ET on CBS.
