How ‘Star Trek’ Was Simon Pegg’s Ultimate Fan Dream

Everyone has memories of their first encounter with a TV show or movie that they would grow to love, but in the case of “Star Trek,” the arc of Simon Pegg‘s fandom might top all of them.

MTV News caught up with Pegg during a red carpet event for the “Star Trek Into Darkness” Blu-ray, and he recalled his first encounter with “Star Trek,” which actually wasn’t through the original television show starring William Shatner and Leonard Nemoy.

Pegg explained that he first saw “Star Trek” in the form of the 1970s animated series that aired after the original show ended. “I was watching that before I saw the live-action show in the very early ’70s and then watching the original TV show in ’78 or ’79 when I was on holiday. BBC2 used to show it at 6 o’clock every night, so I’d watch it while I had my dinner,” he said. “I used to just love it because it was this strange, odd, kind of thoughtful show that was all about sci-fi, which I love. I have very strong memories of it as a child.”

While Pegg’s experience finding “Star Trek” isn’t all that unique, it was a movie role in J.J. Abrams’ first “Trek” movie that took it to the next level. “What was weird was actually getting to act with Leonard Nemoy and acting with a character that I’ve known since I was a kid, not just the actor, but the character,” he said. “When Spock spoke to me as Spock, it was mind blowing.”

“Star Trek Into Darkness” is available on Blu-ray, DVD, and for digital download.
