Iggy Azalea Isn’t Sweating Backlash Over Biggie’s ‘Mo Money Mo Problems’ Sample

Iggy Azalea is getting ready to drop her debut album The New Classic on April 22, but a song that won’t appear on the LP is also attracting a bit of attention.

Last month Irv Gotti previewed a new song that samples the Notorious B.I.G’s “Mo Money Mo Problems,” which finds Iggy rapping over the beat while Keyshia Cole adds her vocals. And, of course, hip-hop fans had a lot of less-than-positive things to say about it.

During a visit to “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (April 2) with T.I. by her side, Iggy explained how it all came together.

“It was just supposed to be a remake of ‘I’m Coming Out,’ it wasn’t supposed to be ‘Mo Money Mo Problems,’ and I didn’t know what I was getting into,” she said. “Irv hit me up and said, ‘hey I’ve got a record with Keyshia on it and it’s gonna be for the soundtrack to this Cameron Diaz movie ‘The Other Woman.'”

Iggy was excited about having the chance to work with Keyshia Cole and Irv Gotti, but she didn’t hear the song until she actually got to the studio. And from there, she just went with it.

“I’m from a generation where I don’t think ‘I’m Coming Out’ — I think ‘Mo Money Mo Problems,'” Iggy explained. “So I thought, I need to get my Ma$e on, and I went with that vibe. Then I think when people heard it they said, ‘She’s doing the Biggie remake,’ and I don’t know if it was necessarily meant to be that. It’s open to interpretation.”

Although some fans weren’t happy about the “remake,” the 23-year-old added that she still stands by it.

“First of all, I love Biggie forever and Tupac, and that’s a sampled song. So don’t be mad about something that’s sampled already. And who wouldn’t say yes to that? I didn’t know what I was getting myself into, but if I did I would’ve said yes. Because any rapper that gets asked to do that is gonna do that.”
