Is Marvel Sending ‘Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ To Outer Space?

As an agency, S.H.I.E.L.D. is dead. As an idea, it lives on in the form of Agent Phil Coulson and his five remaining subordinates: Melinda May, Leo Fitz, Gemma Simmons, Antoine Triplett and Skye.

Only one episode remains in the first season of “Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.,” and it’s hard to see how it’ll all come to an end, with so many plot lines left unresolved. There’s John Garrett, the man who once called himself “The Clairvoyant,” now revealed to be the first Deathlok; dying and in need of perfecting the formula that brought Coulson back to life.

There’s Grant Ward, the duplicitous agent who seemed like a straight-laced hero, but was actually an embedded spy the whole time. Is redemption even possible for him at this point? In last night’s episode, “Ragtag,” it seemed like Ward was on the verge of turning things around — and then he shot a dog.

On top of that, Ward sent FitzSimmons to their doom, ejecting them from the Bus and letting them sink to the bottom of the ocean. It looks like the S.H.I.E.L.D. squad’s science team is about to go the way of Charlie Pace.

All of these stories will come to a head in next week’s finale, “Beginning of the End.” But where does “S.H.I.E.L.D.” go from there? “Girls” actor and incoming “Star Wars” star Adam Driver has a theory:

Could “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” head to outer space next season? It’s not only plausible, it’s likely. Consider the following:

1. Coulson was resurrected thanks to a secret serum derived from a creature that looks to be Kree:

2. It’s heavily implied that Skye is an alien; at the very least, she’s an 084, an object of unknown origin, and it’s believed that her parents were “monsters.”

3. When Garrett gets a life-saving booster shot from the last bit of GH serum, he convulses and has a cosmic feeling. Ward asks him to describe the sensation, and Garrett offers a telling answer:

4. The kicker: Marvel is already going to the stars this summer:

Why shouldn’t “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” follow suit? There are already several clues in place that the answers Coulson and Skye are searching for are up in the sky. Why not send them to space, especially after Marvel’s Cosmos become a well-known quantity after “Guardians of the Galaxy” hits theaters?

It’s just one of several possible outcomes for next week’s finale, titled “Beginning of the End.” We’ll see how it all shakes out one week from today.

What do you think will happen in the “S.H.I.E.L.D.” finale next week?
