Jason Derulo is not only singing about love on his new single, “The Other Side,” but he also took it to the studio with him for some inspiration.
The singer opened up about making sweet sounds with his real-life girlfriend, Jordin Sparks, for his still-untitled summer album, admitting that sometimes it got messy along the way.
“We kind of butt heads in the studio, a little bit,” he told MTV News. “We kind of work differently and we’re very used to being in the studio, but being in the studio our way. So you know, it could get kind of ugly in there sometimes but we made it happen. It’s a beautiful thing. We did a few songs together; one will be on her album, one will be on mine.”
He added, “I’m a perfectionist, but more importantly, I’m a control freak in what I want things to sound like, and she’s the same way. It’s just that. I mean we made it happen. In the end, it’s not like crazy anger or anything like that.”
Fans might have to wait a little while longer to hear what he and Sparks cooked up in the studio, but for now they are getting an early listen to what his album will sound like. He dropped his new single, “The Other Side,” on Tuesday, and it’s an upbeat ditty about falling for your girl. And he says that its joyful vibe is his reaction to being injured and fracturing his neck back in January 2012.
“I’ve been working on my album for about a year ago and I really wanted to make sure the material was ready and that I came back different and better than before,” he explained. “I came off of a near-death experience, and it really helped me to grow up and change up a little bit. I feel like I’m a different person. I’m a little more grown-up, and my music will always match that. So it’s a Jason Derulo that is a little more sleek, a little more refined. The album has a full range of just all kinds of different material. You know there’s super-emotional love songs and there’s crazy party records, all having to do with what I’ve been going through for the past year.”
Derulo also promises to show off that more mature side when he drops the video for “The Other Side” later this month. He said, “You’re going to see a lot of hot sexiness and some dancing.”
