Jay-Z Explains His ‘Big Brother Thing’ With Kanye West

Jay-Z tried rap retirement once and it didn’t work out so well for the veteran MC, so don’t expect Hov to hang up his mic any time soon. There are still albums he intends to get out — including one in particular with Kanye West.

“There’s always Kanye and Watch the Throne 2,” Jay said during the final installment of his interview with the BBC‘s Zane Lowe.

Hov, who released his 12th solo album, Magna Carta Holy Grail on July 4, says that he had a good time working with ‘Ye on their 2011 collaboration. He has been talking about doing a sequel since almost immediately after the first Watch the Throne was released, and lately the talks have picked up.

“You might see a Jay, then Kanye and a Throne album next year. You know, we’re really in a great place creatively. We really found our zone,” Hov told MTV News in December 2011.

It took a little longer than Jay predicted, but fans have since gotten the two solo albums and another Throne album would surely be welcomed. The two collaborators certainly have chemistry.

“It actually was really easy, because of the relationship. It’s always been a big brother thing and a respect thing. It’s always a good experience,” he said of working with West, who dropped his solo album Yeezus in June. “He’s going to challenge everything because he’s really trying to test it and poke holes to make sure that it stands up. I admire that. It kind of works for me.”

During the interview, Lowe asked Jay about being a dad and wondered how long the rapper and his wife, Beyoncé, would continue to make music and live their lives in the spotlight. “It’s difficult because it’s something you love, it’s something you spent your whole entire life doing, so you always feel like I have one more. It’s just how it is,” he began to explain. “Not out of some sense of ‘let me grab another check …’ “

The way Hov sees it, creating music has been a part of his life for so long, it has defined him in a sense. And Beyoncé started in the business at an even younger age than he did. “When you’ve been doing something that long, you love it, it’s what you do, it’s who you are. It’s part of who you are as a person,” he said. “People get up in the morning and do the same thing. People are creatures of habit.”
