Forget about Rihanna, One Direction or Justin Bieber, if Facebook, Twitter and Instagram had existed when the Beatles were in their prime the Fab Four would have 100 percent crushed the most-liked competition.
Jimmy Fallon imagined what that would have looked like on Monday night’s “The Tonight Show,” when he dressed up as John Lennon and invited “Late Night” band leader Fred Armisen to do his best Ringo Starr, for a bit we’re calling “Meet the Tweetles.”
Claiming to have unearthed “never-before-seen footage” of the legendary band from their first television appearance in the U.S. on “The Ed Sullivan Show” in February 1964, Fallon showed a clip he said proved the Beatles were way “ahead of their time.”
“We’re the Beatles! Don’t forget to like us on Facebook! And you can follow us on Twitter at @TheBeatlesUK!” said Fallon, doing a not-great Liverpool accent. “We’re also on Instagram, that was just The_Beatles1. Check it out to see some exclusive backstage pics and some Throwback Thursdays!”
Not only were they social media time travelers, the band also pioneered the use of the product placement Vine, shilling for Sprite with the #spritebeatles and #obeyyourthirst hashtags.
