JoJo is back! After ongoing legal troubles, she has found a new record label to call home. The 23-year-old singer has left Blackground Music and inked a deal with Atlantic Records.
The L.A. Times first broke the story on Tuesday, noting that she signed the Atlantic deal back in December.
JoJo has released only two albums since 2004. They spawned hits like “Leave (Get Out),” off her self-titled debut album, and “Too Little Too Late,” off 2006’s The High Road.
But she’s been unable to drop her third album release due to a battle with her former record label, which was also once the home of Aaliyah. (She did, however, release mixtapes and one-off singles, including and her cover of Drake’s “Marvin’s Room.”)
In the summer of 2013, JoJo filed a lawsuit against the label, and its imprint Da Family Records, prompting fans to begin the #FreeJoJo campaign online. Now, it seems, JoJo might finally be able to drop her long-simmering third album.
Since the news broke, the singer has been celebrating on Twitter, retweeting fans who are excited to hear what’s next from her. @Girl4Music21 wrote, “YES! @JoJoistheway is FREE!! Finally. Now make a cracking album like we know you can and let us know why we worked so hard for you!”
@MizzKitty_RZS added, “I can’t wait for New music from JoJo… #talentoverpolitics.”
The support has been pouring in non-stop from fans who want to hear what she has been working on. @missblair140 added, “@JoJoistheway is free! Hallelujah! Finally! I need more JoJo music! Thank God! :)”
It isn’t just her stans who are excited. Her celebrity and industry pals are also celebrating her big news.
Supermodel Coco Rocha wrote, “@jojoistheway so happy to hear the news. I’ve been following your story for many years. I hate injustice, glad a new chapter begins! Xx Coco.”
J. Fray, who worked with JoJo early on in her career, also sent congrats to the singer. “@JoJoistheway Was your assistant engineer as Sony Studios when you first got signed. So much talent….hope you finally get your due,” he wrote.
In addition to the promise of new music, JoJo will join Paul Iacono, Natasha Lyonne and “Awkward” star Molly Tarlov in the flick “G.B.F.,” out Friday.
