Lil Za, Justin Bieber‘s friend who was arrested on Tuesday morning (January 14) for narcotics possession, has been released from jail, police have confirmed to MTV News.
Lil Za, whose real name is Xavier Smith, spent the day at the Lost Hills/ Malibu Sheriff’s Station after officers reportedly found drugs — either cocaine or Molly, a form of ecstasy — while searching for evidence in an alleged egging of a neighbor’s home.
Smith was originally booked for a felony narcotics violation, but Lieutenant Michael Williams confirmed that he damaged — “not destroyed,” he clarified — a phone in his holding cell, resulting in an additional felony vandalism charge.
Williams confirmed that Smith was released late Tuesday night, but did not have any updates on whether the substances found were cocaine or MDMA.
At a press conference earlier in the day,Lieutenant Dave Thompson confirmed that Bieber was “not connected” to the substance found in his residence.
“He was not arrested, nor exonerated at this time,” he said, but maintained that the investigation is ongoing.
The raid was conducted after Bieber’s neighbor alleged that the pop star cause more than $20,000 in damages after egging his home. Any damage in excess of $400 is considered a felony.
“It’s a felony crime; I get that it was done with eggs, which makes you feel that it’s a lower-level crime, but a felony crime is a felony crime, no matter how you commit it,” he said. “and this crime rose to the felony section, and a judge signed a search warrant saying we should go get evidence related to the felony crime.”
