“Should I release a new single today???” Coming from Justin Timberlake, who wrote exactly that on Instagram Thursday, the answer is obvious: YES!
So JT did. He unleashed his “T.K.O.” song, #4 on his The 20/20 Experience – 2 of 2 track list. Hours after the initial tease, the track was finally available for fans to stream on his website — just in time for the album’s September 30 release.
And Timberlake wasn’t lying when he said that this album would be “more dangerous” than part 1 of the 20/20 Experience, as evidenced by “TKO.” The track is a Timberlake/Timbaland joint, with signature bleepy production and dark undertones, a far cry from the album’s lead single, upbeat throwback jam “Take Back the Night.”
Timberlake sings, “It cuts right on my eye, yeah it hurt, won’t lie/ Still can’t see, think I saw you with another guy/ Can’t fight, knocked down, then I got over you/ Can’t fight no more, you knock me out/ What am I supposed to do?” The song is punctuated by beat-boxing and Timbaland repeating the line, “Kill me with the coo-coochie-coochie-coo.”
JT made his fans wait a little for the new music, releasing the track nearly twelve hours after his initial tease, by following with a new sneak peek every few hours. We got a picture of him in the studio, a bluish photograph taken through a hazy window. And then there were short videos featuring Justin vibing with Timbaland under the same blue filter.
With every tweet and Instagram, though, followers grew hungry for more.
But once “TKO” hit, fans were advising their friends to put down everything to listen to the track.
Timberlake will be previewing more new music at the iHeartRadio Music Festival this weekend. “We’re looking at playing some new material from the second half of this record,” he told Ryan Seacrest Thursday morning.
