Justin Timberlake is back in “Cry Me a River” mode. In the just-released video for “TKO,” the second single from, The 20/20 Experience — 2 of 2, JT revisits the drama-filled 2002 clip for the song from his debut solo album, except this time instead of getting the girl, the girl gets him. Like, permanently.
The seven-minute mini-movie directed by skater-turned-director Ryan Reichenfeld co-stars Elvis’ granddaughter, Riley Keough, who portrays Justin’s clearly over-it girlfriend. When things open, she’s looking bored while lounging around Justin’s sleek, modern man pad, reading a magazine and staring off into space with a resigned look on her face. Timberlake looks on from afar as the lyrics for the song that uses boxing as a metaphor for a rocky love asks, “where did you go?”
Less than a minute in, though, things get serious. Real serious. The next shot is of JT being dragged through the dirt at high speed behind Keough’s truck, one foot tied by a long rope to the bumper. She seems nonplussed about her actions, at one point punching the dashboard, which translates into Justin feeling a punch to the gut as he sings the song’s lyrics and doubles over in the midst of his long drag ride.
The scene shifts back and forth between the sullen couple lounging around the apartment, her head in his lap or his shoulder as he looks off solemnly and Timberlake’s captive trip though the desert. She shoves his chest as they argue in the kitchen after giving him a half-hearted lap dance, the relationship clearly in the final, ugly cycle of reconciliation and intense arguing. He pushes her back and throws her on the counter for a hot make out sesh … and then it’s back to him getting dragged through the brush.
Oh, and the late night kitchen rendezvous goes from grinding to JT buttoning up his pants and taking a frying pan to the dome, so clearly things aren’t getting better in the story co-written by Reichenfld and the singer.
And we won’t ruin the ending for you, but we’ll just say that Keough goes all “Thelma and Louise” on Justin and they definitely won’t have a happy ending.
