It feels like we’re going to get a Kanye West album sooner or later. Over the weekend DJ Hudson Mohawke played a pair of new Yeezy songs during his set at the Free Form Festival in Warsaw, Poland, building even more hype for West’s highly anticipated sixth solo LP.
While most of us only have barely audible YouTube clips from Mohawke’s set to go off of, G.O.O.D. Music affiliate Travi$ Scott heard ‘Ye’s new tunes during a recent trip to Paris and suggests that we may not be ready for what’s coming. “That sh– is like some next-level 3000,” he told MTV News, suggesting that West is ahead of his time with his new music. “We’re already in the year 3000 f—ing with that sh– and that’s why I love hanging out with those guys over there. You get caught on to that new sh– extra fast.”
The first of the songs played during Mohawke’s set this past weekend sounded bass-heavy and EDM-inspired; still, there seemed to be some very Yeezy-like wit. “We’ll get this bitch shakin’ like Parkinson’s,” he raps, seemingly in reference to a party he’s attending.
The second track seems to be more politically driven as Kanye reflects on his mother and the struggles she saw growing up during the civil rights era. It’s a subject he first touched on with a lyric on “Never Let Me Down” off his 2004 debut, The College Dropout; he rhymes about his mother being arrested at the age of 6 after attending a sit-in protest. On this new, unnamed track, Yeezy continues the story. “My mama was raised in the era where/ Clean water was only served to the fairer skin/ Threw on clothes you would’ve thought I had help/ But they wasn’t satisfied unless I picked the cotton myself,” he offers up.
Scott, who is signed with both Kanye’s G.O.O.D. and T.I.’s Grand Hustle, wouldn’t give up much about Yeezy’s new album. “You know how he feels about his sh–,” Travi$ said of West’s mysterious ways.
“What I can say is, it’s cool as f—, you just learn a lot, you see a lot, you hear a lot and you just get the information super-early,” he explained about being in the studio with West. “That’s what influences me to work 13 times as hard.”
