Kanye West compared the intrusion of paparazzi in his life to rape — and managed to compare himself to a porcupine — during another rant at his second show at the Wireless Festival at London’s Finsbury Park Saturday (July 5).
Dressed in a black and white jacket and jeans with a silver-studded mask, the Yeezus MC took a detour during his performance of “Runaway” to offer an “explanation” for his altercation with photographer Daniel Ramos last year at LAX.
“Everybody needs a day off,” Kanye said. “Everybody out here likes sex, right? Sex is great when you and your partner be like ‘Hey this something we both wanna do.’ But if one of the people don’t wanna do that, what is that called? That’s called rape. That’s called violation.”
As smoke plumed from the stage backed by a large video screen showing cascading waterfalls, Kanye explained that he was a “mix between shy, lazy and a little bit arrogant.”
“Anytime I tell the truth when I get up here, everybody thinks it’s so crazy, right?” he asked. “And the media paint me as if I’m some sort of villain or like I’ve got a bad bone in my body. I’m really more of a porcupine or a blowfish. And the photos they always take is when that blowfish is blown up or when that porcupine is defending itself from the lies and control and the manipulation that you deal with if you are an artist. Sometimes, my only response is to go ‘Aaaaaahhhh!’”
The Chicago rapper then shared with the audience, which was either indifferent or booing or clamoring for Drake, that he was upset that fateful day because he’d just gotten news that his grandfather, who he called “Buddy,” was on his deathbed.
“So if I walk around and say ‘Look, sir, I’m not feeling so good today. I found out my grandfather’s about to pass, I’m going through some shit. Can you please not f-ck with me today?’ he said. “There’s no cutoff switch. And that’s why I look so crazy because I feel like I’m gonna take this sh-t into my own hands. I understand that that won’t work anymore cause I’m on probation currently.”
Before diving back into the music, he also spoke about protecting his family, especially daughter North.
“I just want her to be able play in the park one day, I just want her to play,” he sang with the assistance of auto tune.
