Katy Perry Makes ‘Angels Cry’ On New ‘Prism’ Track

Katy Perry has already shows her claws in the smash hit single
but now she’s digging them in and making it hurt so good with the latest track from her upcoming album, Prism.

When MTV News caught up with the singer last week she teased that the next music we’d hear from her would be a sort of
that would relate to anyone and everyone.

“It’s a love song and it’s different from ‘Roar’ — it’s not eighth-notey,” Perry said. “And I think it’s a universal love song that everyone’s going to be able to relate to no matter the age, no matter male or female. It’s my favorite song off the record.”

On Monday morning (September 30), she unleashed the tune, “Walking on Air,” and she wasn’t kidding.

The song, a classic disco rager with a propulsive beat and party-all-night lyrics feels custom made for late nights at the club, not to mention plenty of high NRG remixes. “Tonight, I’m walking on air,” Perry sings in her lower register over a staccato synths in the opening moments before a driving beat kicks in and she starts describing her celestial scene.

“This is pure paradise/Even heaven is jealous of our love/ Yes, we make angels cry/Raining down on earth from up above,” she sings, before getting down to what sounds like some serious sweaty business in the 90-second preview posted on iTunes. “Just when I think I can’t take anymore/We go deeper and harder than ever before/. We go higher and higher I feel like I’m already there.”

Between her wailing diva vocals, a gospel choir that kicks in during the final minute and the driving beat, Perry has captured a unique sound that both recalls the classic 1970s disco era as well as the EDM thump of today’s clubs.

“Air” is the third song fans have gotten from Prism, which is due out on October 22. So far, in addition to first single, “Roar,” we’ve also gotten previews of the Juicy J collabo

Perry tweeted about the song on Monday morning, writing, “Another color from my #PRISM: WALKING ON AIR! Available NOW as party of my #PRISMPREVIEW!”

Perry is set to close out the month long iTunes Festival in London tonight.
