Katy Perry Was On Lock For Bonnie McKee Vid, But What About George Takei?

Bonnie McKee proudly declares she’s an on her high-energy debut single, which she dropped last Wednesday. But what makes the song so buzz-worthy is the video that goes along with it, thanks to the star-studded cameos.

Celebrities ranging from close pals like Katy Perry and Ke$ha to less expected ones, including Tommy Lee (in drag!), “Star Trek” star George Takei and legendary rock band Kiss, all appear in the clip. “I know that people when you’re not somebody yet people are less likely to help out, so I was taking a chance hoping. I knew that Katy would support me and Ke$ha and everybody, my close friends, but some of the other ones are just a gamble. I’m still shocked actually,” she explained to MTV News.

The songwriter/pop singer (who has penned tracks for Ke$ha and Perry, among others) opened up about tracking down the who’s who of stars who ended up in the final cut.

“Well Kiss, I’ve known since I was a teenager. I had the same manager as Kiss for a long time back in the day. So I used to go backstage and hang out with them and they just always were big supporters of me,” she explained. “They were kind enough to lend their iconic faces to the video, so they’re like old-school friends of mine.”

They aren’t the only rockers in makeup; a dragged-out Tommy Lee also makes a memorable appearance, drumming and applying makeup. She said, “I know him through kind of the DJ circuit. So [my boyfriend and I] went on a rave cruise. Totally normal, I totally was hanging out with Tommy Lee on a rave boat in the middle of the ocean so no big deal.”

Sassy comic Joan Rivers and her “Fashion Police” crew are also pals with her. “I’ve been on ‘Fashion Police’ several times and we have a love/hate relationship. No, they’re just always giving me sh– about my fashion but they’re really sweet,” she said. “They support my wackiness.”

And while she personally knows many of those folks, “Star Trek” actor George Takei was the wild card. “I’ve been a big fan for a long time and I just thought he has such an amazing presence online,” she said. “He accepted and oh my gosh, you should see his video, just by itself. The audio on his video is hilarious. I think I’m going to post it. It’s so great.”

Perhaps the biggest compliment of all, aside from getting him to appear in the video, was Perry’s comment at the end of the video, where she dubs her “California Gurls” songwriter her competition.

McKee said, “It was funny. It’s funny we joke about it all the time ’cause we’ve known each other since we were teenagers and kind of an ongoing rivalry a little bit. But we were like frenemies a little bit, but we love each other. She’s always supported me. I’ve always supported her, so it’s just a cute little wink and a smile moment.”

The video has amassed nearly 500,000 views since its debut, and despite all the video’s star power, McKee is surprised by how popular it’s become. “I mean you know I was hoping it was going to do something. I was like ‘Well, you know I know a lot of famous people, so hopefully this can help me out a little bit.’ But I really didn’t expect it to do what it’s doing,” she explained.
