Kendrick Lamar is heading to the BET Awards with eight nominations, including one for Best Male Hip-Hop Artist, but he’s set to hit the stage for a performance too. All of that considered, the Compton MC is only focused on having a good time on Sunday night.
“It’s just me enjoying myself, me and my team — the people that support me and my music,” Kendrick told MTV News on the ASCAP red carpet Thursday night. “BET, much love to them for acknowledging the talents, so we’re gonna enjoy ourselves.”
K. Dot made it clear that he wasn’t stressing, but simply looking forward to the festivities, even rapping a little bit of French Montana’s “Ain’t Worried’ About Nothin” to prove it!
“I’m just going out there to have fun man,” he said. “Ain’t nothing to it, ain’t nothing over-the-top where I’ve gotta think about it, so I’m just enjoying myself.”
His strategy for getting the best out of the night was pretty simple. “Just really thinking about everybody that blessed that stage, those that came before me and recognize them living in that moment,” he revealed. “I’ll try my best to live in that moment, because everybody don’t get to be on that stage, man. It’s a true blessing for me to get to do that.”
Kendrick Lamar is also nominated for Best New Artist, Best Collaboration and Video of the Year for “Poetic Justice” (featuring Drake). Other performers at the BET Awards include Nicki Minaj, Chris Brown, Mariah Carey, A$AP Rocky and Justin Timberlake.
The 2013 BET Awards kick off live from Los Angeles on Sunday, June 30, at 8 p.m. ET. MTV News has got you covered on the red carpet, show highlights, winners and more!
