Will Kanye West soon be humming “Here Comes the Bride”?
A day after video snippets of ‘Ye serenading Kim Kardashian shook up the Internet, the rapper and his expectant girlfriend are making news again as talk turned on Wednesday (May 8) to the couple’s rumored engagement, all thanks to a pair of long-sleeved gloves.
A mask-adorned West raised eyebrows during his Met museum gala performance, but it was reality star Kim’s high-neck, floral-print Givenchy gown that really came under scrutiny once the red carpet had been rolled up and the photos uploaded to the Internet. Critics particularly took issue with the Kardashian styling team’s apparent last-minute decision to add gloved sleeves (or gleeves, as New York magazine put it) to the dress. But in a new interview with Women’s Wear Daily, Riccardo Tisci fiercely defended his maternity design and said he was aiming to have his very own “Kim Kardashian moment.”
“She is the future wife of a really good friend of mine,” Tisci said. “I wanted to have a moment of family … Kim, Kanye and the baby.”
That the Givenchy creative director, who is also a close friend and collaborator of Kanye, would refer to the “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” star as West’s future bride was enough to ignite speculation that the two had already made plans to tie the knot. Moreover, that her concealed hands were a deliberate choice meant to hide a sparkling engagement ring.
Kardashian was famously married to Kris Humphries for 72 days before filing for divorce from the NBA player in October 2011. The marriage was officially dissolved last month after dragging on in court for more than a year. This would be the third marriage for Kim, the first for West. Their firstborn is reportedly due in June.
As for that ball gown, Tisci was steadfast. “People can say what they want,” he said of the negative reaction to what he saw as a “punk moment with a romantic beautiful flower-printed dress.” “To me, pregnancy is the most beautiful thing in the world, and when you celebrate something, you give people flowers. I think she looked amazing. She was the most beautiful pregnant woman I dressed in my career.”
