Ever since their first appearance “Headbanger’s Ball” and their turn on “Unplugged,” Nirvana were always part of the MTV family. So when news broke on April 8, 1994, that frontman Kurt Cobain had committed suicide, it hit us pretty hard.
On the 20th anniversary of that sad day, we went back to the archives to see how MTV made sense of the news that floored the music world while commemorating a musical light dimmed way too soon. MTV News was there with videos, interviews and a two-hour special about the 27-year-old grunge icon’s life.
