Lana Del Rey is out with a brand-new track from her upcoming Ultraviolence album and it’s a tongue-in-cheek anthem for everyone who lives in New York’s most Charles Bukowski-packed borough.
While the title of the jam suggests that it’s some kind of Brooklyn anthem, the lyrics are seriously humor-tinged. We’re not sure whether Del Rey is making fun of the wide-eyed creativity of Brooklyn girls, poking fun at herself — or something in between. Fun sidenote: I once saw Lana eating a piece of pizza, waiting for the L train at the Bedford stop. I’m not sure what that contributed to this song, but there it is.
“And my boyfriend’s in a band/ He plays guitar while I sing Lou Reed/ I’ve got feathers in my hair/ I get high on hydroponic weed,” she croons. Her boyfriend Barrie-James O’Neill comes in on the chorus as well, adding another layer of irony when he sings, “Yeah my boyfriend’s pretty cool/ But he’s not as cool as me/ Cause I’m a Brooklyn baby.”
