Lana Del Rey gave us a little of the old, or, rather, new Ultra-Violence Monday, bestowing unto us her upcoming album’s lead single, “West Coast.”
After premiering the jam at Coachella this past weekend, Del Rey posted it online, complete with a black and white clip featuring the singer and a long-haired gentleman cavorting on the beach in leather jackets, beach goth-style. The caption says an official video is coming soon.
A dark, whisper-y jam, “West Coast” finds Del Rey as a more mature version of her “Lolita lost in the hood” persona, kicking off with some seriously ominous tones and the lyrics, “Down on the West Coast they got a sayin’/If you’re not drinking then you’re not playin’.”
We then segue into the chorus, “You’ve got the music in you,” which I choose to believe is a nod to the New Radicals’ 1998 hit, “You Get What You Give.” I could be wrong, though.
The first taste of the upcoming record, “West Coast” hints at a more subdued, rich side to Lana Del Rey’s work, perhaps influenced by The Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, who she announced was producing Ultra-Violence back in February.
She revealed the “A Clockwork Orange”-inspired title in December at the Hollywood premiere of her short film “Tropico.”
As far as I can tell, “West Coast” contains no references to the Anthony Burgess classic. We’ll just have to see if Alex and his drooges make any cameos when the album drops some time this May.
