Lil Mama Calls Her Left Eye Gig Better Than Christmas

There’s being in the right place at the right time and then there’s the kind of luck that comes only once in a lifetime. Lil Mama knows all about the second kind because she’s in the middle of the luckiest streak of her career.

“The best reaction that I’ve heard from that film … My mom had plans for me and why I was born, so for people to say that I was born to play Left Eye?” Mama told MTV News on the red carpet at Sunday night’s American Music Awards, where she performed with the reunited TLC on the main stage. The mini-set of hits with T-Boz and Chilli was a sequel of sorts to Mama’s well-received turn as the pair’s late third member, Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, in the VH1 biopic, in which she brought the rapper’s high-spirited personality to life.

“I thought that was really cool because it was a co-sign to say that I did a really good job and they really appreciated it. And when people are a really big fan of someone there’s a legacy and it’s hard to fill that void. For people to be really happy with my performance … I’m stoked.”

From sharing the stage several times with Chilli and T-Boz to pulling off her first major dramatic role alongside actresses Keke Palmer and Drew Sidora in the movie, 2013 has been all about the TLC mindset for Mama, who was hard-pressed to think of anything that could top that experience.

“My favorite memory from this year?” she said. “Of course the movie. It’s my favorite memory. I was able to wear Left Eye’s full costume in ‘Scrubs.’ Like, her exact [outfit] no alterations. That blew me away. Christmas would have to beat that moment out. My family would have to do something really amazing for me to be like, ‘You got it.'”
