Lil Wayne is all about individuality. On 2008’s Tha Carter III, he declared himself a Martian, and earlier this year he told fans for the second time that he is out of this world with his I Am Not a Human Being II LP, so why would Weezy’s new line of sneakers look anything like anything else?
“Every time I wear it, people are like, ‘What was that you had on?’ ” Wayne told MTV News of his new Spectre by Supra sneaker line. Perhaps he will be sporting the new kicks when he sits down with Sway Calloway for a special episode of “RapFix Live” with Birdman and his YMCMB crew. It all goes down Wednesday at 4 p.m. on MTV Jams and RapFix.MTV.com.
Supra’s first Wayne-backed model is called the Chimera, named after the Greek mythological creature made up of a lion, snake and goat. On Friday, Weezy celebrated the sneaker’s release with a special party in Miami, where he invited members of both the hip-hop and skate communities.
“Supra’s been down with me for a long time,” Weezy said of his relationship with the sneaker company. “Video shoots, anything I had to do, tour or whatever, they are always in support. They always send too many shoes. This was all their idea, give him his own shoe and I’m just going with it.”
The designs are bold and fit Wayne’s taste. The Chimera, for example, combines a look of a basketball shoe with the puffed-out aesthetic of a skate sneaker. (Weezy, of course, is a big fan of both sports.) The Chimera color ways vary as well; there is a tennis ball green model as well as black, purple giraffe and print variation. They definitely look different, and with that Lil Wayne takes pride.
“I’m happy to say it’s my shoe,” he said with a huge smile. Catch Lil Wayne, Birdman and YMCMB on “RapFix Live” Wednesday at 4 p.m. ET on MTV.com and live on MTV Jams. Be sure to join the Twitter conversation using the hashtag #RapFixLive. Send your questions for the artists to @MTVRapFix!
