Little Mix are taking America by storm. Not only do they have Mixers lining up to catch a glimpse of them at signings and appearances across the country, they are also leaving their mark on the charts thanks to girl-power anthems like
Their debut album, DNA, which they released May 28, just broke a record: They are the first British girl group to debut in the top five with their debut album release, according to their label, Sony. The group topped the legendary Spice Girls. Debuting at #4 on the Billboard albums chart in its first week, DNA beats the Spice Girls’ 1997 debut, Spice, which landed at #6 in its first week.
“It was amazing. I don’t think any of us ever expected to ever get in the top five. And to beat the Spice Girls was even more incredible ’cause they are like our idols,” Jesy Nelson told MTV News. “We looked up to them when we were younger. They’ve led the way for British girl groups to crack America, and it feels lovely that we’ve done it as well.”
The foursome has been spending time Stateside promoting their debut, and were busy spreading the gospel of DNA when they heard about the news. Leigh-Anne Pinnock recalled, “We just finished a signing, and we got a phone call from a member of the label, and literally we screamed. It’s just mad. It’s crazy.”
In fact, their success has been noticed by the Spice Girls themselves. Shortly after the news broke of Little Mix’s hot chart debut, Mel “Scary Spice” Brown tweeted her support for the girls, proving that girl power is alive and well in 2013.
“All of the Spice Girls have been so supportive,” Perrie Edwards said. “We’ve met most of them … Even when we’d just gotten off the ‘X Factor’ and we’d won it, Geri [Halliwell] sent us flowers. And they’ve all been so supportive. They were just incredible. It’s nice to feel like we’ve got their support a little bit.”
While each lady has a Spice Girl they most identify with, they say it’s easy to love each of the members of the iconic girl group. Jesy shared, “I love them all in all different ways.”
