This weekend, as many kids are roving around backyards hunting for plastic eggs stuffed with candy as part of their Easter festivities, many of us may feel left out. We’re told it’s unacceptable to gallivant around, snatching the brightly colored, poorly hidden gems before the little tikes can get them. Though we still strongly believe that if 4-year-olds want the candy, they have to earn it by getting better at finding eggs (it was right there, Suzy, honestly), we can still recognize when it’s time to (reluctantly) take a step back and make our own fun.
This Easter, we’re celebrating on the couch with our favorite hidden movie Easter eggs, those little nuggets and sly references dropped into unrelated films, a wink to the savvy viewer.
Oh, and you can have those eggs, baby Tobi. We’ll see you in the discount candy aisle on Monday morning.
Read on for 13 of our favorite movie Easter eggs
A Starbucks Cup in Every “Fight Club” Scene
The story goes that each scene of David Fincher’s counter-culture classic has a white cup from the famous coffee chain.
Waldo’s Hidden “Apocalypto” Frame
When Jaguar Paw falls into a pit of dead bodies, a frame of the famous puzzle book character pops in. Seemed like an appropriate time for a joke, I guess.
“The Dark Tower” Appears In “The Mist”
Early in the film, Thomas Jane’s character is painting what is clearly a picture of Roland Deschain, the hero of Stephen King’s beloved fantasy series.
Xenomorph’s Skull In The Trophy Room In “Predator 2”
“Alien Vs. Predator” was still years away, but the extraterrestrial killer took an early lead with this Easter egg.
Captain America’s Shield In “Iron Man”
Steve Roger’s shield makes a much more obvious appearance in “Iron Man 2,” but it was in Tony’s workshop from the very beginning.
The Pizza Planet Truck In Every Pixar Movie
The animation house sure does love their Easter eggs. This is one of the longest running ones.
“Batman/Superman” Logo In “I Am Legend”
Warner Bros. was planning the team-up all the way back in 2007, but sometimes things don’t go according to plan. Coming 2010? Try 2016.
R2-D2 In “Star Trek”
Even before J.J. Abrams had signed on to direct “Episode VII,” he was sneaking his favorite droid into other sci-fi franchises.
E.T. in “Star Wars – Episode I: The Phantom Menace”
George Lucas plays homage to his buddy Steven Spielberg with this nod in the Galactic Senate.
‘Aladdin’ Shows Us The Beast
When the Genie turns Aladdin into Prince Ali (fabulous he, etc.), a tower of animals appears. Look, there, on the left toward the top: It’s the Beast from “Beauty and the Beast”!
C-3PO Goes Back In Time
As if living in space wasn’t enough, now R2-D2 and C-3PO have evidently traveled back in time, according to the hieroglyphics in “Raiders of the Lost Arc.”
The Toy Shining
Ever notice that the carpet in “Toy Story” is the same as the carpet in the creepy hotel of “The Shining”? Now you’ll never un-notice it. Hey, kids!
Sam Raimi’s Car Gets Around
This is perhaps the mother of all Easter eggs: Director Sam Raimi’s car has appeared in such films as “The Evil Dead,” the remake of “The Evil Dead,” “Drag Me To Hell,” the “Spider-Man” trilogy and more. Vroom vroom, here we are again.
