While we’re sure you had a very eventful Sweet Seventeen, we’re guessing that Lorde has you all beat. Come to think of it, she has pretty much every famous musician beat, too.
In mere days, Lorde will have the chance to add an iconic honor to her growing metaphorical and literal trophy shelf: a VMA. The 17-year-old singer is nominated for two awards in the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards — Best Rock Video and Best Female Video. When she heard about her nominations, the Kiwi musician seemed confused, tweeting, “wowzer … vma nominations! OMG i am the black sheep of both my categories hahahaha.”
Um, but are you really, Ella? You’ve achieved more in roughly 12 months than a lot of musicians have in their lifetimes. You may seem wise beyond your years but, dude, you have lived.
Let’s talk a walk down Lorde’s gold-paved memory lane before she hits the red carpet come August 24:
First, She Had That #1 Single
Ever heard of a little song called “Royals”? Unless you lack ears, you probably have. Not only did it hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the track — and Lorde — also made history. Lorde is officially the youngest solo artist to top the chart since Tiffany and “Could’ve Been” in 1988 — and “Royals” also now holds the record for the longest reign on the Alternative Songs chart by a lead female, usurping Alanis Morissette and her 1995 hit, “You Oughta Know.”
Talk about living that fantasy.

She Got The Weird Al Treatment
And being parodied? That’s even better. Especially when the one doing the parodying is none other than the King himself, “Weird Al” Yankovic.
She Also Won Some Little Award, What’s It Called…?
Oh, yeah! A Grammy. Actually, two Grammys — for Song of the Year and Best Solo Pop Performance. And that’s only two — albeit very important — of the shinies on her shelf. She may have seen scant few diamonds in the flesh, but she has seen a lot of glinting metal that most musicians would sell their mother’s leg for.
And She Performed At The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Induction Ceremony
Lorde played out all of our angst-y, childhood dreams when she performed with the surviving members of Nirvana as part of their induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Other performers included Joan Jett and Kim Gordon and — oh, what’s that? Just 2,000 twenty-something indie musicians giving up and going to law school like their dad suggested back when they were young.

Not only did Krist Novoselic cover Lorde’s “Royals” (way to jump on the bandwagon, dude), Dave Grohl said that he was glad when he heard his daughters singing along to her jams.
“When I first heard ‘Royals’ it was sandwiched between all of that other stripper pop,” he said. “I was so f–king relieved. I thought, ‘Hey, this might be another revolution.’ When I met her I said, ‘When I first heard your song on the radio and my kids sang along I felt like there was hope for my kids to grow up in an environment which is more than just superficial.’”

She’s Also Being Trusted To Curate An Entire Movie Soundtrack
After contributing a stellar cover of Tears For Fears’ “Everybody Wants To Rule The World” to the soundtrack of the last “Hunger Games” installment, “Catching Fire,” Lorde was asked to curate the soundtrack for the next film, “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1.” We’d like her to be our ally in the Arena that is life.
