Fresh out of high school, Mac Miller was rapping about senior skip days and the Nikes on his feet on his 2010 breakout mixtape K.I.D.S. (Kickin’ Incredibly Dope Sh–). But he promised growth on his June 18 LP Watching Movies With the Sound Off, and the 21-year old Pittsburgh MC exhibits a great deal of it on the Pharrell-produced “Objects in the Mirror.”
Mac dropped a live version of the track on Tuesday in a viral video dubbed “The Space Migration Sessions,” a nod to his upcoming tour of the same name. In the clip, Mac sings (and doesn’t rap) his new tune while backed by the Odd Future-affiliated band the Internet and DJ Clockwork. “People love you when their on your mind/ The thought is love’s currency/ And I been thinking ’bout her all the time/ I never seen somebody put together perfectly,” he breathes in his distinct Steel City accent.
The track is both achy and optimistic, as Mac doesn’t just express the difficulties of love, but also offers a solution. “Just a little taste and you know she got you,” he wails singing of his heartbreak before electing to leave of pain in the “rear view.”
There appears to be a definite growth in Miller’s music and not only does Watching Movies promise some pretty interesting features from Earl Sweatshirt and Ab-Soul, it is also set to feature a great deal of production from Larry Fisherman, Mac’s alter ego. “On Blue Slide Park, the core of the album was everything that me and [Big Jerm] and [E-Dan] did, so we would sit and make the songs from scratch, but they would handle the production,” he told MTV News earlier this month. “The only difference with this one is, I said, ‘You know what? It’s time for me to step in and try this.’ “
