Macklemore & Ryan Lewis may have hit the big time — the hip-hop duo scored three Moonmen at Sunday’s 2013 Video Music Awards — but when it comes to celebrity-featuring selfies, Mack is a regular Stalker Sarah. The latest additions to his collection? A cadre of snaps from this past weekend’s VMAs.
Looking at Macklemore’s Instagram feed is like gazing at a wall at your local pizzeria where the owner has pasted shots of him and local celebs — times about a million. Mack’s most recent picture features him posing with Diddy at the VMAs, with a subsequent photo of him and Ryan Lewis holding their trophies aloft. Mack also has photos with the likes of Robin Thicke, Big Boi, Justin Timberlake, Jay Z, Erykah Badu, Tyler, The Creator, Wale, 2 Chainz, J. Cole and ?uestlove — and that’s just to name a few.
For a man who went toe-to-toe with Timberlake at this year’s VMAs — tying with JT for the most nominations — Macklemore seems mighty starstruck. Or he’s just really into making memories.
Although Macklemore has been in the game for more than 13 years now, it was his independently released album The Heist — which he dropped last year with Ryan Lewis — that finally catapulted the musician into the public eye, his single “Thrift Shop” becoming permanently etched into the population’s brainpan.
“We had no idea that it was gonna do this well, but I think the people are behind it, and it’s an exciting thing for an independent artist to push this many units,” Mack told MTV News following impressive sales of The Heist that scored the album the number two spot on the Billboard albums chart.
Despite the album’s immense popularity, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis have remained indie, which makes their three VMA wins — including Best Hip-Hop Video for “Can’t Hold Us” — even more special. The guys also took home VMAs for Best Video With a Social Message (“Same Love”) and Best Cinematography (“Can’t Hold Us”).
As Mack’s fame continues to grow, we can only imagine how his selfie collection will as well.
