Top Dawg Entertainment runs a pretty tight ship and label stars Kendrick Lamar and Schoolboy Q have a close bond, but when it comes to the Best Hip-Hop Video at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards, Q is going against the Black Hippy grain.
K-Dot’s “Swimming Pools” vid is going up against Drake’s “Started From the Bottom,” J. Cole’s “Power Trip,” A$AP Rocky’s “F–kin’ Problems,” and Schoolboy’s favorite, by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis.
“Of course I’m rooting for Kendrick, but Macklemore probably should win. I’m pretty sure Kendrick believes that too,” Q told “RapFix Live” when he appeared on Wednesday’s episode.
The epic vid for “Can’t Hold Us” was shot on six different continents over the course of 16 days, before it premiered in April. “We appreciate good stuff and that video was crazy. I appreciate what Macklemore did with that video; I liked it better than Kendrick’s,” Q said with his all too familiar laugh.
On Wednesday, Q, who was inducted into MTV Jams’ Fab 5 class of 2013, debuted his “Collard Greens.” The psychedelic clip features Kendrick rapping, and his Best Hip-Hop competitor Macklemore dancing in the background. Schoolboy will also appear in Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ upcoming video for “White Walls,” but refused to elaborate on that upcoming visual.
“It was fun. I don’t want to say too much about it, give too much away. I don’t know what he said and I don’t want to be the one to give it away ’cause I’m featured on the song,” he said. “But it’s pretty cool, it’s fun, it’s energetic. It kind of reminds me of my old record ‘Hands on the Wheel’ that I dropped last year.”
