Marvel’s Comic-Con Panel: What Surprises To Expect

For the past few years, Marvel Studios has been the master of the big Hall H surprise at San DiegoComic-Con, and no one is expecting this year’s panel to be any different. With “Thor: The Dark World” and “Captain America: The Winter Soldier” as the only official participants in the panel, fans have been left to guess what the promised “many surprises” could be.

With so many movies already planned for the next four years, it’s hard to imagine that only the next two films would make an appearance. “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Avengers 2,” the film’s scheduled for August 2014 and May 2015 respectively, are big possibilities for surprise additions to the panel, which starts today (July 20) at 6:00 p.m. PT.

Last night, MTV News spoke with Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito at the screening of the most recent One Shot he directed, the “Captain America” spin-off “Agent Carter.” D’Esposito hinted that the panel today would focus more on the near future instead of going as far ahead as the 2017 dates they already have scheduled.

And sorry, Captain Marvel fans. Though the D’Esposito teased the audience with the possibility of seeing Carol Danvers on the big screen or maybe an announcement in Hall H, he was just playing to the crowd a little, as he explained to us after the screening.

So what can we realistically expect from the Marvel panel? Even a conservative gambler would bet on something from “Guardians of the Galaxy.” The James Gunn-directed sci-fi movie has been shooting for a few weeks now, but Marvel has yet to send out its customary start of production press release, which usually contains the first official photo from set. It’s likely that Marvel has been waiting for special occasion to release a first look or identify the rest of characters on the roster for the film, since the roles of most of the actors have yet to be announced.

A wilder prediction for the Marvel panel would include some surprise for “The Avengers 2.” Director Joss Whedon is in San Diego, and with production supposedly starting up in January, we could be looking at an official cast unveiling, perhaps including Thanos, the villain teased after the credits of “The Avengers.”

Regardless of what goes down, MTV will be there to bring you all of the details as they happen beginning at 6 p.m. PT.
