The night before Marvel blew the ceiling off of Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con with their surprises involving “Guardians of the Galaxy” and “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” they brought a very special guest to premiere “Agent Carter,” their new short film, on the big screen. Peggy Carter herself, Haley Atwell, was on hand at the debut of the Marvel One Shot, which is included in the “Iron Man 3” Blu-ray, but you can get a sneak preview in an online clip.
“Agent Carter” tells the story of what Peggy did after the events of “Captain America: The First Avenger.” Once the war ended, she moved to Brooklyn, hoping to find a place in S.H.I.E.L.D., but a misogynistic boss, played with trademark nastiness by Bradley Whitford, is determined to keep her in the office, organizing files.
The short clip shows what happens when Peggy is left alone in the office and has an opportunity to prove herself once out from under the oppression of Whitford’s character.
Directed by Marvel Studios co-president Louis D’Esposito, who directed the previous Marvel One Shot “Item 47,” “Agent Carter” is the biggest and most ambitious short to date, and that’s the general direction the series is going. “That’s the question and the problem. You can only go so big, and then it’s not a short anymore,” D’Esposito told MTV News after the screening. “I think we try to stay in the 10 to 15 minute area and try to stay around this size. I’ll keep pushing it though.”
The completeness of “Agent Carter” makes it easy to imagine bringing in an unused superhero from the Marvel Universe to introduce in a One Shot, but D’Esposito said that it’s been tried and the logistics make it too difficult.
“Introducing a hero is tough. Even though we have developed a couple of scripts that have a hero in it, but only a glimpse,” he said. “But it’s tough for a number of reasons. We don’t have a filmmaker on that doing that project, casting the actor that would play the hero, the development of the environment and costumes. We don’t have the resources for that.”
