Michael Sam Docu-Series Gets Postponed

By Maurice Bobb

Michael Sam’s docu-series has officially been sacked.

Just two days after Oprah Winfrey’s OWN network revealed its plan to film the NFL’s first openly gay player’s journey as he tries to make the St. Louis Rams’ final roster, OWN and Sam’s representation announced Friday (May 16) that the series has been postponed.

Critics and sports pundits expressed doubts that the defensive end’s mind would be focused on football with camera crews following his every move, so the decision was made to table the show.

“After careful consideration and discussion with the St. Louis Rams, the untitled Michael Sam project has been postponed, allowing Michael the best opportunity to achieve his dream of making the team,” said Erik Logan, president of OWN. “OWN is about elevating and empowering people to achieve their best. It’s clear that we, along with the world, recognize the important opportunity that Michael now has in this moment. We will continue to support him in his journey to earn a spot playing for the Rams.”

The former SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Year’s agent, Cameron Weiss, agreed that it was in his client’s best interest to curtail bringing his “deeply personal” story to the small screen, for now.

“After today’s meeting with the Rams, we collectively feel it is best to postpone the project,” said Weiss. “This will allow for Michael to have a total focus on football and will ensure no distractions to his teammates. Everybody involved remains committed to this project and understands its historical importance as well as its positive message.”

No word on when/if the project will be revisited.
