Michael Sam Is Officially A Free Agent

St. Louis Rams defensive end Michael Sam cleared waivers at noon ET today after being cut by the team yesterday.

Having not been claimed by one of the other 31 NFL teams, Sam is now free to sign with a practice squad. ESPN reports that Sam may still join the team’s 10-member practice squad, and that he and Rams coach Jeff Fisher are expected to discuss sometime today.

Despite failing to make the Rams’ 53-person roster, Sam – the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL – served up a team high of six tackles in the Rams’ last preseason game.

Sam was a seventh-round draft pick for the Rams in May, clocking in as the 249th NFL pick overall. He showed with a preseason total of 11 tackles and three sacks.

“I believe he can play in this league,” Fisher said in a news conference yesterday. Where he lands, on the other hand, is completely up to Sam at this point.
