There’s not a whole lot of change atop the Billboard charts this week, with Katy Perry maintaining her grip on the Digital Songs chart and Luke Bryan staying at #1 on the albums chart. The real action was over on iTunes, as several stars experienced massive boosts in sales following the MTV Video Music Awards. Let’s just say Kanye West and Justin Timberlake were probably happy they decided to show up.
JT, Kanye and Miley Get Big Bumps
Though the full impact of the VMAs won’t be felt until next week’s Billboard charts — this week’s charts reflect the sales week that ended on Sunday, the day of the broadcast — based immediate iTunes data, well, being on the big show was definitely good for business: basically anyone who graced the stage experienced a serious bump in sales in the hours following the telecast.
Kanye West’s “Blood on the Leaves” shot up an incredible 1187 percent in sales, while Justin Timberlake was close behind, posting a whopping 1,876-percent increase in sales. Lady Gaga saw sales of “Applause” increase by 115 percent, Katy Perry’s “Roar” jumped 25 percent, and Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke both reaped the benefits of their scandalous collaboration, as Cyrus’s upcoming Bangerz rose to #5 on the iTunes album chart, and Thicke’s new single, “Give It 2 U” jumped 30 percent in sales.
Katy’s “Roar” Rules Once Again
It’s a second week atop Billboard’s Digital Songs chart for Katy Perry, as “Roar” sold another 392,000 downloads to hold on to the #1 spot. Robin Thicke’s ubiquitous “Blurred Lines” remains at #2, selling 251,000 downloads, while Avicii’s smash hit “Wake Me Up!” leaps all the way up to #3, selling 175,000 downloads.
Jay z and Justin Timberlake’s “Holy Grail” holds steady at #4, with sales of 171,000, with Lady Gaga’s “Applause” dropping to #5 (163,000 downloads). Lorde’s breakout “Royals” rises to #6, followed by Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop” at #7, Lana Del Rey and Cedric Gervais’ “Summertime Sadness” at #8, Luke Bryan’s “That’s My Kind of Night” at #9 and Imagine Dragons’ “Radioactive” at #10.
Luke Bryan Crashes The Albums Chart Once Again
While Katy Perry claimed the top spot on the Digital chart for the second consecutive week, country star Luke Bryan made it two in a row atop the Billboard Albums Chart. His Crash My Party sold nearly 159,000 copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan, enough to hold off the week’s biggest debut, John Mayer’s Paradise Valley, which opens at #2 with sales of more than 143,000 copies.
TGT’s Three Kings debuts at #3, selling more than 76,000 copies, followed by margarita-master Jimmy Buffett, whose Songs From St. Somewhere sold 55,000 copies to open at #4. Earl Sweatshirt’s Doris debuts at #5, with sales of nearly 49,000 copies.
The rest of the Top 10 is rounded out by Robin Thicke’s Blurred Lines (#6, 46,000 copies sold), the Now 47 comp (#7, 33,000 copies), the Teen Beach Soundtrack (#8, 32,000 copies sold) and A$AP Ferg’s Trap Lord (#9, 32,000 copies). Jay Z’s Magna Carta … Holy Grail closes out the Top 10 with sales of nearly 30,000 copies.
