It is her party and Miley Cyrus will do what she wants to. Including debuting at #1 thanks to 270,000 copies sold of Bangerz, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan. The singer easily tops the Billboard 200 tally with her heavily hyped disc, which includes the #1 hits “Wrecking Ball” and
Miley Does It
While Cyrus bested the early sales predictions for Bangerz, her debut was well short of big first weeks by some established peers including Justin Timberlake
, Jay Z and Drake. And though it didn’t match the first-week number of 2008’s Breakout (371,000), it did give Cyrus her fifth #1 career debut.
Panic! And Pusha
Panic! At The Disco had a strong #2 debut well behind Cyrus with Too Weird To Live, Too Rare To Die!
, matching their previous high first week position.
It was also a career week for the Clipse’s Pusha T,, who landed at #4 with his frequently delayed solo debut, My Name is My Name.
JT And Drizzy Tumble
Drake’s Nothing Was The Same (83,000) was down another 44 percent in its third week, but the album only slipped one spot to #3 as it steamed toward the 900,000 mark. The news was not nearly as good for Justin Timberlake, whose The 20/20 Experience — 2 Of 2 was down 80 percent in week two, dropping four spots to #5 on sales of nearly 70,000.
While JT still easily owns the year’s best selling album with the first part of 20/20, his huge tumble is one of the largest percentage drops for a #1–debuting album in the SoundScan era, putting him behind Madonna (86.7 percent for MDNA, Lady Gaga (84.2 percent for Born This Way), Mac Miller (82.5 percent for Blue Slide Park and Kanye West’s Yeezus, 81 percent) in that ignoble category.
The drop was not as steep for New Zealand phenom Lorde, whose Pure Heroine was off 51 percent to 63,000 as it fell three spots to #6.
The Quarterback Scores
The digital EP soundtrack to
the Cory Monteith tribute episode of “Glee,” came in at #7 (47,000), leading a parade of new faces in the top 10. Nu-metal rockers Korn hit #8 with Paradigm Shift (46,000), “The Voice” singer Cassadee Pope was in at #9 with Frame By Frame (43,000) and Mayday Parade’s Monsters in the Closet (30,000) rounded out the top 10.
New faces charting next week include Pearl Jam, Fall Out Boy, Paul McCartney and Scotty McCreery.
Bieber Breaks Lots Of Hearts
It’s still Lorde’s world on Billboard‘s Digital Songs chart, where “Royals” kept the #1 position locked down again with sales of another 294,000. But coming up hard on her tail is Justin Bieber, whose “Heartbreaker” jumped 17 spots to #5 on sales of 127,000 in its first full week of chart eligibility.
It could be the first of many Bieber charters in the near future, as the singer has promised to drop a new song every week for 10 weeks as part of his Music Mondays series.
The rest of the top 10: Katy Perry, “Roar” (#2, 195,000), Avicii, “Wake Me Up” (#3, 160,000), Miley Cyrus, “Wrecking Ball” (#4, 128,000), Drake, “Hold On, We’re Going Home” (#6, 121,000) and Eminem’s, “Survival” (#7, 117,000), the second top 10 debut from the rapper’s upcoming The Marshall Mathers LP 2.
What The Fox Sells
Viral video hitmakers Ylvis
crash into the top 10 at #8 with “The Fox (What Does The Fox Say?,” which shot up 25 percent and four spots on sales of 108,000.
