Miley Made It Famous: 6 Things She Made Cool In 2013

It’s safe to say that one of the most talked-about people of this year is Miley Cyrus.

The pop star just released her fourth album, Bangerz, which is slated to sell 250,000 copies in its first week, giving her the #1 album on the Billboard 200 chart. It’ll outsell her last album, Can’t Be Tamed, almost doubling its first-week sales.

However, it hasn’t all been about the music this year for the “Miley: The Movement” star. She’s shocked and wowed us with her revealing interviews, wacky dancing and her quirky style. With every headline, she’s created a lasting conversation among critics and fans, which is why MTV News has rounded up six things that Miley made mainstream in the past months.

Twerk It Out

Twerking has been around for more than 20 years — and has even been referenced in Justin Timberlake’s “SexyBack” and Beyoncé’s “Check on It” — but it wasn’t until Miley threw on a onesie and posted a video of herself twerking to J. Dash’s “Wop” back in March that the booty-shaking moves started flooding pop culture.

That video was just a warm-up for what was in store, Miley then went on to show off her twerk skills at a Juicy J concert. She worked it out in the “We Can’t Stop” video and, of course, she twerked up on Robin Thicke during the 2013 Video Music Awards. As a result of the dance move becoming such a phenomenon this year, the term “twerk” was added to the latest edition of Oxford Dictionaries Online.

Onesies

After Miley’s video went viral, her onesies did as well. Many may associate onesies with childhood pajamas, but shortly after dancing in a hooded unicorn jumpsuit, the outfit made a resurgence with both fans (check out the Smiler in the “Miley: The Movement” rocking a “Sex, Drugs and Rap” onesie) and celebrities, with Justin Bieber and Ke$ha sporting the look.

Tongue Poses

We’ve seen it on every red carpet, every performance and in every photo shoot — of course we could only be talking about Miley’s tongue.

Miley revealed the mystery as to why her tongue is always out in her Rolling Stone interview, admitting she does it because she hates her smile. “It looks so cheesy,” she said. While promoting “Saturday Night Live,” she joked that when her tongue is out, it helps her smell.

All kidding aside, Miley’s tongue has taken on a life of its own, inadvertently making it a selfie-staple. And just in case you haven’t mastered the Miley tongue pose, she broke it down for us, step-by-step.

Foam Fingers

Miley certainly had a lot of shocking moments while onstage at the 2013 VMAs, but probably the most unlikely piece of the performance to gain so much attention was her now famed foam finger.

Critics scoffed at her suggestive dancing with the sports-game prop — one of them being Steve Chmelar, the creator of the foam finger, who went as far to say that Miley “degraded” the “honorable icon.”

Well Chmelar might have to get used to the image of Miley, who brought the red-nail painted finger to the set of Mike Will Made It’s “23” video. Two Amazon vendors are selling replicas, just in time for Halloween. They’re selling quickly, so get ready to see them everywhere.

Wrecking Balls

After watching Miley’s “Wrecking Ball” video, it’s safe to assume that no one will ever look at the demolishing tool, or a sledge hammer, the same way again. The video captivated audiences as they watched Miley ride a wrecking ball naked, lick tools and roll around in her underwear. Not surprisingly, shortly after the video’s release, fans got in on the action coming up with creative, creepy and even scandalous parodies. In September, kids at a Michigan University protested their campus’ decision to remove a wrecking ball sculpture after students started swinging on it paying homage to Miley.

Baby Buns

Miley had one of the most dramatic hair makeovers in 2012 when she decided to chop off her long locks for a short pixie, sparking a new hair trend. One year later, she’s doing it again. At the 2013 VMAs, where one fan let MTV give her a Miley makeover, the “We Can’t Stop” singer showed off a ’90s look as she channeled Gwen Stefani and Spice Girls Mel B, tying two tiny knots on the top of her head.
