Neon Trees Frontman Tyler Glenn Comes Out As Gay

Neon Trees frontman Tyler Glenn follows in the footsteps of Ellen Page, Jason Collins and the like in this month’s issue of Rolling Stone, coming out as gay and commending others in the public eye for taking the same plunge.

“I really love all of the sports figures that are coming out recently,” he told Rolling Stone. “I appreciated [football player] Michael Sam was like, ‘I want to be able to go to the movies and hold hands with my boyfriend.’ Even hearing him say ‘boyfriend,’ I was just like, that’s cool.”

“I’ve always felt like I’m an open book, and yet obviously I haven’t been completely,” he said, explaining that he knew he was gay as a child, but kept his sexuality a secret, dating women while simultaneously finding himself falling in love with straight male friends.

“It was the worst feeling in the world,” he said.

Glenn has been a practicing Mormon his entire life, which he said proved to be difficult at one point in particular. “We were always taught, and I hate this word, ‘tolerance,'” he said. “The only time that felt different was when the Prop 8 thing came up,” he said, referring to Mormons’ stance on gay marriage and the steps they took to ban it.

According to RS, Glenn started telling his loved ones while working on Neon Trees’ upcoming third LP, Pop Psychology, some of which deals with hiding his sexuality over the years.
