When One Direction took the stage at the 2013 Teen Choice Awards on Sunday (August 11) night, we were expecting something, well, teen-aged, to swoon over. Maybe their Teenage Kicks version of “One Way or Another”? But dare we say that 1D has gotten a little rougher?
As Harry sang the opening lines of “Best Song Ever,” he put out a tough vibe. In a rustic chambray shirt, he grunted out, “Maybe it’s the way she walked straight into my heart and stole it. Through the doors and past the guards, just like she already owned it.”
Liam followed suit, giving some grit to the pop song. He wore a simple white shirt and a red, plaid flannel around his waist ’90s style. Grunge much?
The fivesome rocked other shades of denim as strutted around stage with a different attitude. Instead of the playful prancing we’d see in the Take Me Home tour, Harry, Liam, Louis, Zayn and Niallgot gruffy. Louis, usually the clean-cut guy, sported some scruff. Hey, these guys worked hard, and it’s hard to combat 5 o’clock shadow.

Who knows, maybe their super-serious bad-boy style is just adding to their alter egos from the song’s video. Whatever they’re doing is working, apparently. The boys earned surfboards for Choice Love Song (“Little Things”), Choice Music Tour and Choice Single By a Group (“Live While We’re Young”).
