“Point Break,” the hotly anticipated remake of the 1991 action flick of the same name, has found its Johnny Utah. A report from Deadline confirms that Luke Bracey will fill the role of the young, thrill-seeking FBI agent played in the original by Keanu Reeves.
First announced back in 2011, the new “Point Break” plans to update its setting from a surfing enclave to the world of extreme sports, with Gerard Butler filling in opposite Bracey in the role first played by Patrick Swayze.
For those not in the know, the original “Point Break” featured Reeves as a young undercover agent trying to infiltrate a gang of beach bum bank robbers.
Little else is known as of yet about the new movie’s plot, but it’s probably safe to say that the new Johnny Utah should start practicing his character’s iconic, “fire your gun into the air while screaming” move now just in case.
Bracey’s resume is relatively short, but he’s been in the news lately as the replacement for the late Paul Walker in upcoming romance “The Best of Me,” and he’s no stranger to the action oeuvre, having last been seen as Cobra Commander in “G.I. Joe: Retaliation.” Butler, of course, is a veteran of the genre, with starring roles including the Spartan captain of “300” and a rogue hero in “White House Down.”
“Point Break” is slated for a 2015 release, with filming set to begin within the next few months.
