Report: ‘Star Wars: Episode VII’ Casts ‘Girls’ Star Adam Driver In Villain Role

Looks like Adam Driver is heading to outer… space!

According to a report from Variety, the “Girls” breakout star is nearing a deal to join “Star Wars: Episode VII” as the movie’s villain.

The J.J. Abrams continuation of George Lucas’ classic franchise is set to start filming in the coming months, and if Driver signs on as the antagonist, he will be the first actor officially cast in the new trilogy.

The report from Variety is mostly light on details, but the write-up does mention that the character Driver will reportedly play is in the vein of Darth Vader, which could honestly mean anything. Will he wear a mask? Or just a lot of black? Will he have a change of heart in the third movie? At this point, all the Darth Vader comparison means is that he’ll be a villain in a “Star Wars” movie.

Variety is careful to note that Driver has not officially signed on yet, but that he is close to a deal that would make him the only cast member so far. His name had been mentioned with a bunch of others, including Benedict Cumberbatch and Gary Oldman, who claims to have taken a meeting with Lucasfilm.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s account of the casting mentioned that insiders believe a lot of the casting on “Episode VII” is already complete and being kept under the tight wraps of non-disclosure agreements. If that’s true, Driver’s casting would be the first to make it to the outside world.

“Star Wars: Episode VII” is scheduled to open in theaters on December 18, 2015.
