They say the third time’s the charm and if what they say is true, Maybach Music’s Self Made, Vol. 3 compilation will be an extra-special one. MMG boss Rick Ross officially announced the August 6 release on Monday, and then proceeded to drop three separate singles to mark the occasion. By Tuesday, he had released three accompanying music videos.
The Maybach gang kicked off with “Poor Decisions,” a Wale track that features Rick Ross and Lupe Fiasco rapping about the pitfalls of wealth. To follow-up, Rockie Fresh pushed through with a visual for his solo track “God is Great.” The Chicago up-and-comer rides through his hometown in a Rolls Royce Phantom while wearing a black Derrick Rose Bulls jersey and giving praise to the lord.
MMG saved the best for last though. While all three of the Dre Films-directed clips had a ‘major’ feel to them, it was Ross’ video for “Oil Gang Money” that stood out the most. The rags-to-riches story story has a cinematic opening where a struggling mechanic tries to teach his son the value of hard work, but when he fails, a local hustler throws in some advice of his own. “Work harder, not smarter,” he tells the young boy, who’s covered in motor oil, before handing him a $100 bill.
By the time the J.U.S.T.I.C.E League-produced track takes off, Rozay and the song’s co-star Jadakiss are sitting next to tables covered with towering stacks of money as they sip champagne and vodka. The Bawse clearly has no worries when he addresses the January shooting that targeted him. “Attempted murders, I refuse to exile/ So it’s Club Liv til I’m X’d out,” he rhymes.
The three songs and accompanying videos showcase the diversity that exists within the MMG camp and the strength of their variety. And it’s a topic the crew will expand on when they appear on “RapFix Live” on Wednesday (June 5) at 4 p.m. ET/1 p.m. PT on MTV Jams and RapFix.MTV.com
