Vin Diesel’s movie stardom has come and gone (and come again) at least a couple of times, but it’s the actor’s resilience and tenacity that has helped him survive in Hollywood. And in the long-awaited sequel to “The Chronicles of Riddick,” simply titled Diesel doesn’t shy away from letting art imitate life.
“I don’t know how many times I’ve been crossed off the list and left for dead,” Diesel’s Riddick says in the first trailer for the film. “So this ain’t nothin’ new.”
In the third installment of the franchise, Riddick struggles to survive on an alien planet, only to find himself hunted by a group of bounty hunters who will stop at nothing to apprehend him. After Riddick dispatches several among their number, however, he is finally captured, and it seems like the superhuman antihero is destined to finish his days with his head mounted as a trophy on a mercenary’s wall. But their triumph is short-lived when a slumbering alien race awakens outside their encampment, and they must band together with their prisoner to survive.
The trailer features plenty of high-octane action, though this time without the muscle cars and babes that populate the world of the “Fast & Furious” film series. In one sequence, Riddick picks off his human foes one at a time, and in another, he battles against serpent-like monsters under the cover of darkness. Directed by David Twohy, who helmed the first two films, “Riddick” promises to have the epic sweep of “The Chronicles of Riddick” and yet the suspenseful specificity of “Pitch Black,” the sci-fi thriller that started it all.
