The Cannes Film Festival is a guaranteed hot spot for big screen talent and A-list celebrities, and based on this year’s recently announced line-up, 2014 won’t be much different.
Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, Channing Tatum and Ryan Gosling all have films heading to France next month, and each of the movies just so happens to be one really worth getting excited about.
Recently, we’ve brought you some updates about “The Rover,” David Michôd’s highly anticipated follow-up to “Animal Kingdom.” The near future-set crime thriller follows a desperate man (Guy Pearce) who is dead-set on tracking down the men who stole his car and left behind one of their own (Pattinson). Michôd made such an impression with his first feature that this dreary Outback noir is sure to turn heads with its midnight Cannes premiere.
As if having one movie at Cannes wasn’t enough, Pattinson also appears in “Maps to the Stars,” the next film from his “Cosmopolis” director David Cronenberg.
Like her “Twilight” co-star, Stewart has consistently picked interesting projects since leaving behind the world of vampires and werewolves. She’s returning to Cannes after appearing there with “On the Road” two years ago, and her new film comes with even more prestige behind it. “Clouds of Sils Maria” comes from director Olivier Assayas, who is on hot streak after helming the mini-series “Carlos” and the very well-received “Something in the Air.”
Channing Tatum will continue to blaze trails with his first appearance at Cannes. He stars in “Foxcatcher,” the Bennett Miller-directed drama that was pushed from this past awards season. It has now re-emerged, and anticipation is rising all over again. In the film, Tatum plays an Olympic wrestler whose brother is murdered by his sponsor and mentor.
Ryan Gosling took a different path back to Cannes altogether. His directorial debut, “Lost River” (previously called “How to Catch a Monster”) is premiering as a part of Un Certain Regard, an out-of-competition line-up. Gosling had become a staple of the fest in recent years for his collaborations with Nicolas Winding Refn, “Drive” and “Only God Forgives.”
The Cannes Film Festival begins on May 14 and runs until May 25.
