Robin Thicke Warns He Might Be ‘Roaring Drunk’ At VMAs

What do you get when you combine Robin Thicke, sexy scantily clad models and pals T.I. and Pharrell? The memorable, viral and newly VMA-nominated video for

On Wednesday (July 17), the Diane Martel-directed video received three 2013 MTV Video Music Awards nominations. The nods couldn’t have come at a better time for Thicke, who had a very interesting spin on his accomplishment when he spoke to MTV News just hours after it was announced.

“It’s very exciting. MTV, I’ve been watching since I was a kid, and you always want MTV to anoint you. It’s like the video version of the Grammys, so it’s a wonderful feeling to be relevant while you’re still alive,” Thicke joked.

In addition to competing in the Video of the Year category against the likes of Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Bruno Mars and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, the singer is also up for Best Male Video as well as Best Collaboration (which may or may not have something to do with T.I. and Pharrell’s awesome dance moves in the video).

“Nothing’s cooler than Video of the Year because it’s the best of the best, but I’m just honored and excited to be nominated at all,” Thicke explained.

Of course, he just might end up taking home the night’s most-coveted Moonman. Should a Video of the Year win come his way, he already has his acceptance speech ready to go — sort of.

“Should I win it? Well, if I win Video of the Year, by then, I’ll probably be roaring drunk, and I’ll have to be very careful what I say onstage,” he said. “I’ll keep it simple. I’m just gonna say, ‘Thank you. Thank you to all the people that voted. Thank you to my lovely wife and friends for putting up with me for all these years.’ “

Given how inescapable “Blurred Lines” has been this summer, Thicke admits that any win at the VMAs would serve as a nice way to cap it all off when the show takes place Sunday, August 25, live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.

“It’ll be a nice period to the end of the sentence, or maybe an exclamation point. Who knows?” he said. “Definitely some form of grammar.”
