Stars will cross for a whole new generation when Shakespeare’s doomed lovers return in a lavish re-telling of “Romeo & Juliet” — and MTV News has your exclusive first look at the trailer.
Adapted by “Downton Abbey” creator Julian Fellowes and directed by Carlos Carlei, the film stars Academy Award nominee Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth as the titular twosome — children of feuding houses of Verona, forbidden from being together. It just may be, as the clip relays in big, bold letters, “The most dangerous love story ever told.”
And all the requisite moments are here: Romeo and Juliet’s first meeting at a glamorous masquerade ball, Tybalt’s confrontation with Romeo and resulting duel with Mercutio, and that starry night on a moon-lit balcony where Juliet declares her love.
Bard lovers aren’t the only ones who will surely rejoice over this trailer. Fans of Fellowes and his British period drama will also find a lot to love in this first look, which boasts lush sets, beautiful costuming and plenty of familial drama (the Crawleys haven’t seen anything yet!).
Steinfeld and Booth are joined by an impressive cast of supporting players, including “Homeland” star Damian Lewis as Lord Capulet, Paul Giamatti as Friar Laurence, Ed Westwick as Tybalt and Stellan Skarsgard as the Prince of Verona.
“Romeo & Juliet” is the first major re-telling of the Shakespearean tragedy since Baz Luhrmann’s 1996 film fantasia, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes, which transported the tale to modern day while keeping the Shakespeare’s classic dialogue intact.
“Romeo & Juliet” opens October 11.
