Sin City is the place you go with your eyes open, or you don’t come out at all.
Much the same can be said for the new , too. The consequences aren’t as dire as, say, losing your life, if you happen to miss a face or two in the new trailer. Still, with so many blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moments in this first glimpse of Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller’s return to “Sin City,” it’s worth stopping down to take a closer look.
Here’s an eye-opening guided view of the various faces populating the new “Sin City” trailer.
Let’s start with an easy one: That’s Ray Liotta! You know him from such films as “Goodfellas” and “Killing Them Softly.” Here, he’s Joey, a bad businessman looking for a way out of a bad marriage. Apparently, that way includes a silenced pistol. But who’s that up there in the skylight?
That’s Josh Brolin! He plays crusading photographer Dwight McCarthy. But didn’t Clive Owen play Dwight in the original? He sure did. So what’s Brolin doing here?
Let’s just say it might be a temporary stay and leave it at that. As for why Brolin looks so messed up, you can blame that on…
…Eva Green as Ava Lord, the titular dame to kill for. She’s an old love from Dwight’s past, and she resurfaces to ask for his help in getting out of her troubled marriage.
But it doesn’t really look like Ava needs Dwight’s help, does it? It shouldn’t spoil much to tell you that Ava is going to be responsible for a lot of broken hearts in the new “Sin City.”
For example: Christopher Meloni as Mort, a detective who falls hard for Ava. It doesn’t work out so well.
Lording over Ava’s world is ferocious bodyguard Manute. He’s the golden-eyed bruiser from the first “Sin City,” then played by Michael Clarke Duncan. “24” veteran Dennis Haysbert steps into the role for the sequel, taking over for the late Duncan.
And hey, there’s Mickey Rourke as Marv! Didn’t he die in the first film? He sure did. But “Sin City” has always had a tricky relationship with time and space. Expect that to pay off in a big way for Marv fans.
New to the “Sin City” universe is Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Johnny. He’s the subject of “The Long Bad Night,” an original segment created specifically for the “Sin City” films, with no roots in the comics.
Johnny is a gambler, with a secret agenda to take down the biggest villain “Sin City” has to offer. His mission gets somewhat sidetracked when he meets a stripper named Marcy, played by Julia Garner.
Something tells us it’s not going to go so well for Johnny.
Back in the “Sin City” fold is Jessica Alba as Nancy, the hard-drinking, sharp-shooting stripper from the first film. Here she is doing her best Uma Thurman circa “Pulp Fiction.”
Nancy stars in her own all-original, for-the-movie story called “The Fat Loss,” taking place after Hartigan’s suicide. And yep, that’s Hartigan (aka Bruce Willis) right there in the mirror. Even though he’s gone, his reflection will continue to haunt poor Nancy.
Remember this guy? Powers “Cy Tolliver” Boothe plays Senator Roark, an all-powerful figure in the world of “Sin City.” His brother, Cardinal Roark, was the pedophile that Marv killed at the end of the first “Sin City.” Senator Roark is just as deadly and dangerous…
…which is why we’re hoping he meets the business end of a sword wielded by silent assassin Miho, played in the sequel by “Sucker Punch” veteran Jamie Chung.
“Sin City: A Dame to Kill For” opens on August 22.
