‘Star Trek’ Stars Excited ‘Not To Have To Lie Anymore’

MTV News’ Josh Horowitz caught up with two leading Starfleet officers backstage at Sunday’s 2013 MTV Movie Awards. “Star Trek Into Darkness” stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto were on hand, along with co-star Zoe Saldana, to present the award for Best Fight. The men behind Kirk and Spock consistently manage to keep plot details not revealed in the action-packed trailers for the film firmly under wraps, despite constant questioning. That secretiveness, Quinto revealed, isn’t particularly easy to maintain.

“The good news is we’re about two weeks away from being able to actually talk about it,” Quinto said.

“It’ll be nice not to have to lie anymore,” Pine added, echoing his first officer’s sentiment.

Quinto mentioned that it’s been difficult keeping the film’s plot points secret since production commenced in January 2012. Fans have been adept at dissecting every frame of every trailer. Of particular interest has been the identity of fan favorite Benedict Cumberbatch’s character. While his character is named John Harrison, fans have speculated that he could be any villain featured in the original TV series, including the infamous “Trek” adversary Khan.

It’s no wonder fans have taken to scrutinizing every bit of footage used to promote the highly anticipated sequel to 2009’s “Star Trek.”

The J.J. Abrams film reignited interest in the franchise, giving longtime fans a new feature film to enjoy after the franchise’s departure from television in 2005. The film also converted millions of new moviegoers into Trekkies.

Even if they could answer questions about the film, the actors would have a hard time putting their knowledge into proper context since neither has seen a finished cut.

“We’ve seen [some] stuff because we’ve done ADR,” Quinto said of re-recording some original dialogue. “But we haven’t seen it from beginning to end.”

The actors revealed they’ll see a screening of the complete film on Friday, April 19. “Star Trek Into Darkness” opens in theaters on May 17, 2013.
