The MTV Video Music Awards always go big. But this year we’re pulling out all the stops for Sunday’s show at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. In addition to having internationally famous artist and provocateur KAWS redesigning the signature Moonman, giving him his first facelift in 30 years, we’re blowing him up to way more than life size.
KAWS’ design will rise 60 feet over the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards main stage, a towering achievement that will give the space walker some serious shine as he towers over performances by the likes of Lady Gaga, Justin Timberlake, Kanye West, Bruno Mars, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Miley Cyrus, Drake and Robin Thicke.
But how big is 60 feet? We sized up the KAWS Moonman against some other notable giants.
KAWS Moonman award (original version)
The original KAWS-designed version that winners will take home is around 12″ tall. So, even if Macklemore & Ryan Lewis win all six of the awards they’re up for, they’d still come up 54 feet short. You’d have to stack 60 of them to reach the big guy’s height!
Brooklyn Nets starting five
What’s bigger than the Moonman? Not the expected starting five for the resident NBA team at Barclays. Even if you stacked Deron Williams (6’3″), Joe Johnson (6’7″), Paul Pierce (6’7″), Kevin Garnett (6’11”) and Brook Lopez (7′) up on each other’s shoulders, their collective 33’4″ would leave them in no shape to block any potential Moonman jump shots.
Tyrannosaurus Rex
Sure, he was the tyrant lizard king, but T-Rex would have had a hard time wrapping his extra short arms around Moonman, since he was only around 15-20 feet tall.
Optimus Prime
He might be the leader of the Autobots, but Optimus Prime’s got nothing on our fearless VMA icon. Topping out at 28 feet tall, Prime would be child’s play to the space man if the two were to meet up in battle.
King Kong
The original Kong from 1933 was envisioned by co-director/writer Merian C. Cooper at between 40-50 feet tall, no match for our guy.
SpongeBob SquarePants (Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Edition)
Finally! A fair fight thanks to Bikini Bottom’s most hilarious sponge. The Macy’s SpongeBob balloon, which made its debut in 2004, stands (or floats) 62′ high, putting it just a bit above eye level with KAWS’ creation.
A Number 2 New York City Subway Car
If you’re going to Brooklyn for the VMAs, you’ll probably take a #2 or #3 train. And, like SpongeBob, one of its cars is right around the same height (if you stand it on end) as the VMA stage centerpiece at 67′. But it would take five of those trains stacked on top of each other horizontally to reach the top of Moon’s flag.
Justin Bieber’s Twitter
Justin Bieber tweets … a lot. If you measured the height of each of his more than 23,180 tweets (which are approximately 1.5 inches each) to date, you would have 2,898 feet of tweets. How tall is that? 48 giant KAWS Moonmen high.
